WEB DEVELOPER(25)

What This Book Covers
This book attempts to give readers who have learned some Perl a grasp of the concepts and considerations for programming for the Web or creating a Perl program that interacts with the network. This book is fairly Linux-centric. That’s not to say that these programs won’t run on a Windows platform—they will, with very little tweaking. The book is divided into five parts. The first part covers what comes to mind for many people when they think of Perl and web development—namely, CGI development and database interaction. The CGI module is examined, and I present tips for programming CGIs, such as the Carp module for debugging. The second part of the book widens the focus into Internet interaction with Perl. The Net:: family of modules is covered, along with the LWP for retrieving web pages through Perl. Coverage of XML and RSS make up the third part of the book, where you’ll learn about XML parsing through Perl, consumption of SOAP web services, and RSS feeds. The fourth part of the book looks at mod_perl for development. The fifth and final part of the book examines templating through the Template Toolkit and HTML::Mason.

Build Your Own Database-Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL ebook free download

“Content is king.” ClichĂ©, yes; but it has never been more true. Once you've mastered HTML and learned a few neat tricks in JavaScript and Dynamic HTML, you can probably design a pretty impressive-looking Website. But your next task must be to fill that fancy page layout with some real information. Any site that successfully attracts repeat visitors has to have fresh and constantly updated content. In the world of traditional site building, that means HTML files—and lots of 'em. The problem is that, more often than not, the people who provide the content for a site are not the same people who handle its design. Frequently, the content provider doesn't even know HTML. How, then, is the content to get from the provider onto the Website? Not every company can afford to staff a full-time Webmaster, and most Webmasters have better things to do than copying Word files into HTML templates anyway.

Application architecture is an essential skill for ASP.NET developers. It is always tempting to jump in and start coding, but planning your architecture early in the project will leave you with a solid application that scales well, is easy to modify and extend, and saves you time and effort later on. As businesses struggle to control their costs, writing solid code that can be extended easily is becoming even more important.

This book takes a pragmatic approach to Application Architecture in ASP.NET 3.5. It presents a series of common architectural models, and shows how to select the best ones for your project and apply them.
The book begins by showing you how to use the main architectural models in your applications. You will see how to implement n-tier architectures, MVC, design patterns, and more. But this is no software engineering theory book - it is a practical, hands-on guide that shows you how to use these techniques in your software straight away. We then go on to build SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) applications with the Windows Communication Framework (WCF). Finally the book contains some essential guidance on effective database design, and a chapter on localizing your applications.
This book is a great way to learn ASP.NET Architecture in a practical, hands-on way. It will also serve as a quick reference for improving your application design.

This book was written to provide insight into the development techniques needed (and the options available) to work within the DotNetNuke framework. Emphasis is placed on the available methods to extend the framework, as well as the situations and rules governing when each respective extension model should be used. Along with this emphasis on selecting the right extension method, the book stresses the importance of leveraging the framework in as many areas as possible, and ultimately using the framework to the advantage of the developer, rather than merely working with it.

Now more than ever, Windows applications have to work well and look good. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Microsoft's new user interface framework, gives you the ability to create stunning graphics, rich interactions, and highly-usable Windows applications. WPF is the API beneath Windows Vista interfaces, and it's also available for older versions of Windows. Up to this point, it has only been possible to build WPF applications manually, mainly by hand-coding in XAML-WPF's declarative XML-based markup language. The soon-to-be-released Visual Studio 2008 provides the full set of developer tools you need to take advantage of this exciting technology.
The combination of WPF and Visual Studio 2008 represents the start of the next generation of Windows applications. Hand-coding XAML is fine if you're an early adopter, but to put WPF into production, you need to master the tools and application styles you'll use in your day job.

Ever notice that-in spite of their pervasiveness-designing web applications is still challenging? While their benefits motivate their creation, there are no well-established guidelines for design. This often results in inconsistent behaviors and appearances, even among web applications created by the same company.
Design patterns for web applications, similar in concept to those for web sites and software design, offer an effective solution. In Web Application Design Patterns, Pawan Vora documents design patterns for web applications by not only identifying design solutions for user interaction problems, but also by examining the rationale for their effectiveness, and by presenting how they should be applied.
* Design interfaces faster, with a better rationale for the solutions you choose.
* Learn from over more than100 patterns, with extensive annotation on use and extension.
* Take a short-cut into understanding the industry with more than 500 full-color screenshots and a web site for help, discussion, and a collection of additional patterns.

Dreamweaver CS4 is a massive step forward in terms of integration with the rest of the CS4 suite (Flash, Fireworks, Photoshop, etc.), and also includes a whole host of exciting new features of its own. The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS4 with CSS, Ajax, and PHP concentrates on getting the best out of Dreamweaver CS4, rather than going into every menu item and toolbar icon. The emphasis is on developing websites compliant with the latest web standards, using CSS, JavaScript libraries (with particular emphasis on Spry, Adobe's implementation of Ajax), and PHP.
The book covers all aspects of the new user interface, including workspace layouts, iconic panels, the related documents feature, Live View, Code Navigator, and Live Code. It also shows how to use the improved CSS editing features, and JavaScript code introspection. There is also coverage of other new features, such as version control through Subversion integration, and the improved support for Photoshop integration through the use of Smart Objects.
What you'll learn:
* Streamline your workflow with the Related Files toolbar, Live view, and the Code Navigator
* Bring your pages alive with Ajax widgets from Spry, jQuery, and the Yahoo! User Interface Library
* Use server-side includes, templates, and Adobe's InContext Editing online service

About Rails Versions
This book is written for Rails 2. As this printing of the book is going to press, the current generally available Gem version of Rails is 2.1. The code in this book has been tested against this version. This book started life with the same text as the Second Edition, which covered Rails 1.2.6. Pages containing this original text have a gray heading and footer. As we migrate content to Rails 2, you’ll find the header color changes to red. The Third Edition preface contains a table summarizing the status of this update process. In particular, note that in many of the chapters the screenshots have not yet been updated to match the results produced by Rails 2.1.
The Rails core team is continuing to work on Rails 2. From time to time, new releases may introduce incompatibilities for applications written for prior versions of Rails. In order to experiment with these changes, the Rails developers are making the changes available via Edge Rails (discussed starting on page 244). These changes won’t affect you unless you explicitly install this experimental code—you won’t find yourself running it unless you overide Gem defaults or deliberately choose to use Edge Rails. However, if you do decide to run this experimental Rails code, you’ll find that some stuff in this book(and some stuff in your existing Rails applications) may no longer run. To determine the version of Rails that you are running, you can issue rails -v at a command prompt.

As you’re probably aware, Phar is now a core extension in PHP 5.3. This is great news for Greg Beaver, the project lead; he has worked incredibly hard to make the extension do all that could possibly be asked of it, and more. Marcus Borger and myself also work on the extension, but we’ve been left blinking at the speed of development more than once. At the time of writing, Greg had just added OpenSSL signing support to Phar, which means that the only thing left on the immediate TODO is performance optimization.
