This book provides a comprehensive treatment of electric distribution systems. Few books cover specific topics in more depth and there is hardly any book that deals with the key topics of interest to distribution system engineers. The book introduces these topics from two points of view:

1) The practical point of view by providing practical examples and the problems which can be solved.
2) The academic point of view where the analysis and various techniques used for distribution system planning are explained.

The most outstanding feature of this book is a combination of practical and academic explanation of its contents. Another outstanding feature is a collection of the traditional and current topics of distribution systems condensed into one book.

The reader will gain an understanding of distribution systems from both practical and academic aspects, will be able to outline and design a distribution system for specific loads, cities, zones, etc.. Readers will also be able to recognize the problems which may occur during the operation of distribution systems and be able to propose solutions for these problems.

MICROELECTRONIC CIRCUITS: ANALYSIS AND DESIGN combines a "breadth-first" approach to teaching electronics with a strong emphasis on electronicsdesign and simulation. Professor Rashid first introduces students to the general characteristics of circuits (ICs) to prepare them for the use of circuit design and analysis techniques. He then moves on to a more detailed study of devices and circuits and how they operate within ICs. This approach makes the text easily adaptable to both one- and two-term electronics courses. Student's gain a strong systems perspective, and can readily fill in device-level detail as the course (and their job) requires. In addition, Rashid, author of five successful texts on PSpice and power electronics, directly addresses student's needs for applying theory to real-world design problems by mastering the use of PSpice for testing and verifying their designs. More than 50% of the problems and examples in the text concentrate on design, with PSpice used extensively in the design problems.

This exciting new text teaches the foundations of electric circuits and develops a thinking style and a problem-solving methodology that is based on physical insight. Designed for the first course or sequence in circuits in electrical engineering, the approach imparts not only an appreciation for the elegance of the mathematics of circuit theory, but a genuine "feel" for a circuit's physical operation. This will benefit students not only in the rest of the curriculum, but in being able to cope with the rapidly changing technology they will face on-the-job. The text covers all the traditional topics in a way that holds students' interest. The presentation is only as mathematically rigorous as is needed, and theory is always related to real-life situations. Franco introduces ideal transformers and amplifiers early on to stimulate student interest by giving a taste of actual engineering practice. This is followed by extensive coverage of the operational amplifier to provide a practical illustration of abstract but fundamental concepts such as impedance transformation and root location control--always with a vigilant eye on the underlying physical basis. SPICE is referred to throughout the text as a means for checking the results of hand calculations, and in separate end-of-chapter sections, which introduce the most important SPICE features at the specific points in the presentation at which students will find them most useful. Over 350 worked examples, 400-plus exercises, and 1000 end-of-chapter problems help students develop an engineering approach to problem solving based on conceptual understanding and physical intuition rather than on rote procedures.

A comprehensive resource on Verilog HDL for beginners and experts
Large and complicated digital circuits can be incorporated into hardware by using Verilog, a hardware description language (HDL). A designer aspiring to master this versatile language must first become familiar with its constructs, practice their use in real applications, and apply them in combinations in order to be successful. Design Through Verilog HDL affords novices the opportunity to perform all of these tasks, while also offering seasoned professionals a comprehensive resource on this dynamic tool.
Describing a design using Verilog is only half the story: writing test-benches, testing a design for all its desired functions, and how identifying and removing the faults remain significant challenges. Design Through Verilog HDL addresses each of these issues concisely and effectively. The authors discuss constructs through illustrative examples that are tested with popular simulation packages, ensuring the subject matter remains practically relevant.
Other important topics covered include:
* Primitives
* Gate and Net delays
* Buffers
* CMOS switches
* State machine designFurther, the authors focus on illuminating the differences between gate level, data flow, and behavioral styles of Verilog, a critical distinction for designers. The book's final chapters deal with advanced topics such as timescales, parameters and related constructs, queues, and switch level design.
Each chapter concludes with exercises that both ensure readers have mastered the present material and stimulate readers to explore avenues of their own choosing. Written and assembled in a paced, logical manner, Design Through Verilog HDL provides professionals, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates with a one-of-a-kind resource.

In Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC, we have tried to create a comprehensive understanding about on-chip interconnect characteristics, design methodologies, layered views on different abstraction levels and finally about applying the interconnect-centric design in system-on-chip design.
Traditionally, on-chip communication design has been done using rather ad-hoc and informal approaches that fail to meet some of the challenges posed by next-generation SOC designs, such as performance and throughput, power and energy, reliability, predictability, synchronization, and management of concurrency. To address these challenges, it is critical to take a global view of the communication problem, and decompose it along lines that make it more tractable. We believe that a layered approach similar to that defined by the communication networks community should also be used for on-chip communication design.
The design issues are handled on physical and circuit layer, logic and architecture layer, and from system design methodology and tools point of view. Formal communication modeling and refinement is used to bridge the communication layers, and network-centric modeling of multiprocessor on-chip networks and socket-based design will serve the development of platforms for SoC and NoC integration. Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC is concluded by two application examples: interconnect and memory organization in SoCs for advanced set-top boxes and TV, and a case study in NoC platform design for more generic applications.

The theory of transmission lines is a classical topic of electrical engineering. Recently this topic has received renewed attention and has been a focus of considerable research. This is because the transmisson line theory has found new and important applications in the area of high-speed VLSI interconnects, while it has retained its significance in the area of power transmission. In many applications, transmission lines are connected to nonlinear circuits. For instance, interconnects of high-speed VLSI chips can be modelled as transmission lines loaded with nonlinear elements. These nonlinearities may lead to many new effects such as instability, chaos, generation of higher order harmonics, etc. The mathematical models of transmission lines with nonlinear loads consist of the linear partial differential equations describing the current and voltage dynamics along the lines together with the nonlinear boundary conditions imposed by the nonlinear loads connected to the lines. These nonlinear boundary conditions make the mathematical treatment very difficult. For this reason, the analysis of transmission lines with nonlinear loads has not been addressed adequately in the existing literature. The unique and distinct feature of the proposed book is that it will present systematic, comprehensive, and in-depth analysis of transmission lines with nonlinear loads.
* A unified approach for the analysis of networks composed of distributed and lumped circuits
* A simple, concise and completely general way to present the wave propagation on transmission lines, including a thorough study of the line equations in characteristic form
* Frequency and time domain multiport representations of any linear transmission line
* A detailed analysis of the influence on the line characterization of the frequency and space dependence of the line parameters
* A rigorous study of the properties of the analytical and numerical solutions of the network equations
* The associated discrete circuits and the associated resisitive circuits of transmission lines
* Periodic solutions, bifurcations and chaos in transmission lines connected to noninear lumped circuits.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a rapidly developing field that has seen tremendous progress over the past 15 years. The development of GPR spans aspects of geophysical science, technology, and a wide range of scientific and engineering applications. It is the breadth of applications that has made GPR such a valuable tool in the geophysical consulting and geotechnical engineering industries, has lead to its rapid development, and inspired new areas of research in academia. The topic of GPR has gone from not even being mentioned in geophysical texts ten years ago to being the focus of hundreds of research papers and special issues of journals dedicated to the topic. The explosion of primary literature devoted to GPR technology, theory and applications, has lead to a strong demand for an up-to-date synthesis and overview of this rapidly developing field. Because there are specifics in the utilization of GPR for different applications, a review of the current state of development of the applications along with the fundamental theory isrequired. This book will provide sufficient detail to allow both practitioners and newcomers to the area of GPR to use it as a handbook and primaryresearch reference.
*Review of GPR theory and applications by leaders in the field
*Up-to-date information and references
*effective handbook and primary research reference for both experienced practitioners and newcomers.

Once you learn this simple technique you can be making as many solar cells as you like! and save yourself thousands of dollars! Cover your entire roof with solar cells, collect the free energy from the sun! Just think, Since you can screen print these cells, size is no limit. Think about it, a 24" homemade cell that could be powerful enough to run a 12 volt dc x 4 amp motor using only one cell! Solar cell screen printing has been around for about 10 yearsor so and there are many manufactures already doing it here in the USA and abroad. There are many different types of chemical printing inks to use and many different screen printing techniques to apply it with. But the best I have seen so far was invented by Japan, They have a very simple technique of vibrating the ink after it is printed to get the air bubbles out of the wet ink before it dries. This causes the efficiency of the solar cells to sky rocket! An ink vibrator is very simple to build using a of qty 2 18" x 18" x 3/4" plywood and a few push springs from your local hardware store and a small dc or ac motor with an off balance on the shaft which you can buy or make yourself. Japan now has a US patent, The patent claims that they can be just as powerful as our American made silicon solar cells!

This book provides an in-depth overview of on chip instrumentation technologies and various approaches taken in adding instrumentation to System on Chip (ASIC, ASSP, FPGA, etc.) design that are collectively becoming known as Design for Debug (DfD). On chip instruments are hardware based blocks that are added to a design for the specific purpose and improving the visibility of internal or embedded portions of the design (specific instruction flow in a processor, bus transaction in an on chip bus as examples) to improve the analysis or optimization capabilities for a SoC. DfD is the methodology and infrastructure that surrounds the instrumentation. Coverage includes specific design examples and discussion of implementations and DfD tradeoffs in a decision to design or select instrumentation or SoC that include instrumentation. Although the focus will be on hardware implementations, software and tools will be discussed in some detail.

The subject of the book is optoelectronic devices. These are semiconductor devices that employ the interaction of electrons and photons in order to transform electrical into optical signals and vice versa. The large variety of devices, materials, and theoretical approaches often makes it difficult for an experimental researcher to select the appropriate software. Therefore, this book presents a review of devices and approaches, written by leading software providers, in collaboration with partners in the industry or academia. The target audience is students, device engineers, and researchers who are not familiar with the theory behind the software. Each chapter will provide an easy-to-understand introduction to the physics and the main equations, as well as material parameters essential for realistic simulations. The goal is to enhance the general understanding, acceptance, and use of numerical simulations.
The most essential part of this book project is to make it easy for the reader to actually perform advanced simulations himself/herself. Each software package discussed in the book will be available for download in a trial/demo version. This way, every reader is quickly able to repoduce and build on the results shown in the book.

This book presents a collection of algorithms and VLSI architectures of entropy (or statistical) codecs of recent video compression standards, with focus on the H.264/AVC standard. For any visual data compression scheme, there exists a combination of one, two, or all of the following three stages: spatial, temporal, and statistical compression. General readers are first introduced with the various algorithms of the statistical coders. The VLSI implementations are also reviewed and discussed. Readers with limited hardware design background are also introduced with a design methodology starting from performance-complexity analysis to software/ hardware co- simulation. A typical design of the Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) encoder is also presented in details. To support System-on-Chip design environment, the CABAC design is wrapped with a SoC-based Wishbone system bus interface.

Nanophotonics is a field of science and technology based on the manipulation of light with equally miniscule structures, in the same way that computer chips are used to route and switch electrical signals. By enabling new high bandwidth, high speed optoelectronic components, nanophotonics has the potential to revolutionize the fields of telecommunications, computation and sensing.
In this book, Zalevsky and Abdulhalim explore one of the key technologies emerging within nanophotonics, that of nano-integrated photonic modulation devices and sensors. The attempt to integrate photonic dynamic devices with microelectronic circuits is becoming a major scientific as well as industrial trend due to the fact that currently processing is mainly achieved using microelectronic chips but transmission, especially for long distances, takes place via optical links.
* Unlocks the technologies that will turn the rapidly growing research area of nanophotonics into a major area of commercial development, with applications in telecommunications, computing, security and sensing. Nano-integrated photonic modulation devices and sensors are the components that will see nanophotonics moving out of the lab into a new generation of products and services.

Computational Methods for the Innovative Design of Electrical Devices is entirely focused on the optimal design of various classes of electrical devices. Emerging new methods, like e.g. those based on genetic algorithms, are presented and applied in the design optimization of different devices and systems. Accordingly, the solution to field analysis problems is based on the use of finite element method, and analytical methods as well. An original aspect of the book is the broad spectrum of applications in the area of electrical engineering, especially electrical machines. This way, traditional design criteria of conventional devices are revisited in a critical way, and some innovative solutions are suggested. In particular, the optimization procedures developed are oriented to three main aspects: shape design, material properties identification, machine optimal behaviour.
Topics covered include:
• New parallel finite-element solvers
• Response surface method
• Evolutionary computing
• Multiobjective optimization
• Swarm intelligence
• MEMS applications
• Identification of magnetic properties of anisotropic laminations
• Neural networks for non-destructive testing
• Brushless DC motors, transformers
• Permanent magnet disc motors, magnetic separators
• Magnetic levitation systems.

Power consumption of VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated) circuits has been growing at an alarmingly rapid rate. This increase in power consumption, coupled with the increasing demand for portable/hand-held electronics, has made power consumption a dominant concern in the design of VLSI circuitstoday. Traditionally, dynamic (switching) power has dominated the total power consumption of an IC. However, due to current scaling trends, leakage power has now become a major component of the total power consumption in VLSI circuits. Leakage power reduction is especially important in portable/hand-held electronics such as cell-phones and PDAs. This book presents two techniques aimed at reducing leakage power in digital VLSI ICs. The first technique reduces leakage through the selective use of high threshold voltage sleep transistors. The second technique reduces leakage byapplying the optimal Reverse Body Bias (RBB) voltage. This book also shows readers how to turn the leakage problem into an opportunity, through the use of sub-threshold logic.

This book incorporates developments in chronostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy and sedimentation and tectonics that have taken place during the last decade. In particular, the wealth of case studies that have appeared since the late 1980s, focusing on sequence architecture and the relationships between sedimentation and tectonics, have required a virtually complete rewriting of Chapters 6 to 9. The global-eustasy model that was popular as a mechanism for sequence generation at the time of writing of the earlier editions of this book has been downplayed in this edition in the face of abundant new evidence pointing to the importance of tectonism as a process that may generate sequences over a wide range of temporal and physical scales. Amongst other additions, this edition contains new sections describing such topics as basin inversion and basement control of sedimentary basin development, and a range of new case studies of the plate tectonics of sedimentary basins.

Electric power systems will always be exposed to the failure of their components. When a fault occurs on a line, it is crucial for the fault location to be identified as accurately as possible, allowing the damage caused by the fault to be repaired quickly before the line is put back into service. Fault Location on Power Lines enables readers to pinpoint the location of a fault on power lines following a disturbance. If a fault location cannot be identified quickly and this causes prolonged line outage during a period of peak load, severe economic losses may occur and reliability of service may be questioned. The growth in size and complexity of power systems has increased the impact of failure to locate a fault and therefore heightened the importance of fault location research studies, attracting widespread attention among researchers in recent years.

The first edition of High Power Microwaves was considered the defining book for this field. Completely revised and rewritten, not merely updated, the second edition continues this tradition. Written from a systems perspective, the book provides a unified, coherent presentation of the fundamentals in this rapidly changing field. The presentation is broad and introductory, with the flavor of a survey, yet not elementary. The authors cover all the major types of microwave sources, their distinguishing features, and primary research issues, and the fundamental limits on performance.
See what’s new in the second edition:
* Coverage of HPM systems with a detailed example called SuperSystem
* A survey of a class of high power radiators, with very different technologies and applications, that has fully emerged since the first edition
* New HPM formulary contains a handy compilation of frequently used rules of thumb and formulas
The book outlines historical trends that have led to the development of HPM and compares the capabilities of HPM to those of conventional microwaves. It divides the field into two sectors: applications driven and technology driven, and address both perspectives. Starting from the applications of HPM, the book reviews microwave fundamentals, enabling technologies, and the equipment and facilities surrounding the sources in which microwaves are generated. The authors conclude with coverage of ultrawideband technologies and the major source groups.

Organic molecules are currently being investigated with regard to their application as active components in semiconductor devices. Whereas devices containing organic molecules for the generation of light - organic light emitting diodes (OLED) - have already reached the market (they e.g. display information on mobile phones), transistors where organic molecules are used to actively control currents and voltages are still in the development stage.
In this book the principle problems related to using organic materials as semiconductors and to construct functioning devices will be addressed. A particular emphasis will be put on the difference between inorganic semiconductors such as Si, Ge and GaAs and organic semiconductors (OSC). The special properties of such soft matter require particular approaches for processing characterization and device implementation, which are quite different from the approach used for conventional semiconductors.

VOLUME1,VOLUME 2

The two volumes of Whitfield's Electrical Craft Principles have been substantially revised and updated in 2008, reflecting changes in practice and legislation (e.g. BS 7671 / Requirements for Electrical Installations). Volume 2 in particular has new material to accompany course changes. The volumes are presented in a new format, are highly illustrated and contain full problems and solutions.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology prepares regulations for the safety of electrical installations for buildings, the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), which has now become the standard for the UK and many other countries. It has also prepared the Code of Practice for Installation of Electrical and Electronic Equipment in Ships (BS 8450) and recommends, internationally, the requirements for Mobile and Fixed Offshore Installations. The Institution provides guidance on the application of BS 7671 through publications focused on the various activities from design of the installation through to final test and certification with further guidance for maintenance. This includes a series of eight Guidance Notes, two Codes of Practice and model forms for use in wiring installations.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology is one of the world's leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community. The IET publishes more than 100 new titles every year; a rich mix of books, journals and magazines with a back catalogue of more than 350 books in 18 different subject areas including:
